Comments Off on Muskrat and Melting Ice

Muskrat and Melting Ice

In 16 winters here I don’t remember seeing the ice stay past March 31st. This winter was so cold we entered the month of April with ice and it has stuck around for a few days.

The warm air and the cold ice made a foggy inversion layer today that just begged to be photographed.

I was taking photos of the fog, ice, and lake shore when a decent sized muskrat surfaced in the open water between the ice layer and the shoreline. I was able to snap off a few photos from our floating dock. Unfortunately as I went to change the settings to a higher shutter speed to catch the creature in action, he noticed me and ducked back under the ice.

Some selections, including the muskrat, are below.

Coyotes on the Lake

A pair of coyotes were spotted at various places on the lake today.

They were scavenging a deer carcass on the northern half of the lake and then scouting down to the southern end. They did a few rounds today and have been seen on other days as well.

They don’t seem too interested in the houses, but keep pets indoors to be on the safe side.

Rob Cummings took these photos (and one video) at two different times today. If anyone has other photos we will post them here if you send them in to lake@truesdalelake.com. Thanks!

2015 Lake Treatment Letter of Notification

LETTER OF NOTIFICATION

Date: February 2015

Re: Proposed Lake Management Program – Truesdale Lake

Truesdale Lake POA and Truesdale Estates Association are planning to continue the Lake Management Program for Truesdale Lake in 2015. The Program is intended to control pondweeds (Potamogeton crispus and P. foliosus) and algae, thus improving water quality conditions as well as the recreational and aesthetic value of the lake. The Program is being carried out by NYSDEC certified personnel from the lake management firm, ALLIED BIOLOGICAL INC., registered with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (No. 01301). NYSDEC permit applications will be submitted requesting approval for the application of the herbicides Sonar AS (fluridone), Aquathol-K (endothall) and the algaecides Copper sulfate and GreenClean Pro.

Treatments are anticipated to occur between April 1 and August 31, 2015 and will proceed only after the issuance of NYSDEC permits. Aquatic pesticide applications will only occur if sufficient aquatic vegetation is present to warrant treatment and favorable weather conditions exist. Prior notification of the exact dates of treatment will be provided to the Association and NYSDEC 7 days prior to treatment and by shoreline posting on the day of application. Comments Off on Boat Sticker Application Online

Boat Sticker Application Online

Screenshot 5:29:14, 11:31 AM

Lake Truesdale is frozen now — but before too long it will be boating season again! If you have a new boat or if your existing boat sticker has fallen off, you can use the online form to obtain a new sticker.

Boat stickers are free. Stickers must be on all boats used on the lake, regardless of whether you store it at the boat launch property or on your property.

Members of TLPOA, TEA, Vreeland/Lovecross, and unaffiliated Lake Shore Drive riparian homeowners are eligible for boat permit stickers. All applicants will be checked against the list of current members of the above associations before stickers are sent out.

There are many reasons for requiring boats be registered:

  • Getting your boat back in case of flooding and/or wind. Neighbors who retrieve your windblown boat can contact us to determine who the boat belongs to.
  • Stopping invasive plant and animal species from being introduced into the lake (e.g. watermilfoil, zebra mussels, snakehead fish) when boats are used in more than one lake. (Either clean your boat thoroughly if used in a different lake — or better yet DON’T use your boat in multiple lakes.)
  • Ensuring access to the lake is restricted and private.
  • Eliminating trespassing on private properties.
  • Your boat will be impounded and removed (and sold) from boat launch properties in the future if it does not have a valid Truesdale Lake boat registration sticker.

Thanks for your cooperation with this requirement. It helps ensure the health and the privacy of our lake.

Happy 2015! – Some Lake Resolutions for the New Year

Some Lake Stewardship Resolutions:

  1. I will get my septic tank pumped and inspected. If the tank baffles are missing or damaged, I’ll have them replaced. (Kaiser-Battistone offers 15% discount for lake area residents – but you have to tell them about the discount!)
  2. I will “overseed” my lawn rather than spread fertilizer or pesticides. I’ll tell my lawn service – or myself – to cut my grass high and leave the clippings on the lawn. If I think fertilizer is needed, I’ll use phosphate-free fertilizer since it’s the law. I will also tell my lawn care company that it is illegal in Westchester County to use phosphate based fertilizer unless extensive testing has been done on the soil – and even then only on a limited basis and never within 20 feet of the lake.
  3. If I live on the lake, I’ll plant a “buffer” of native plants to slow the flow of rainwater or stormwater (and the pollutants and nutrients it carries) into the lake. I’ll pull up some invasive plants and plant some native ones.
  4. I’ll pick up after my pets and throw their poop into the trash.
  5. This year I’ll make sure no oil or gas from my mower or car spills on the ground or into the lake.
  6. If I take coolers, sand toys, or other beach or boat items to another waterbody, I’ll make sure that they are free of weeds and shells before bringing them back here so I don’t transport invasive plants and animals.
  7. DSC_0103If I haven’t done so already, this is the year I’ll take a safe boating course.
  8. I’ll start or use a compost pile (away from the lake shore, wet areas, or streams).
  9. If it’s icy, I’ll minimize my use of salt by using kitty litter or sand where I can.
  10. I’ll learn more about my lake’s history, health, plants, or animals this year.
  11. I will send photos I take around the lake to us here (lake@truesdalelake.com) so we can post for everyone to enjoy!
  12. I will join and volunteer with my lake association and make my voice heard and my energy felt during this coming year.

Happy New Year to all!

Thanks to Janet Andersen and others for these timely resolutions, add yours below in the comments.

Caroling on the TLPOA Beach – Dec 21st @5:30pm

From the Truesdalelake.Nextdoor.com website:

xmas_carolersGood afternoon to you all on this sunny and brisk December afternoon. We are planning to have our 38 or 39th annual caroling on the beach – on Sunday December 21 – starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be a roaring fire, song sheets, hot chocolate, cookies, and lots of good cheer. With luck, we will have a day with weather like today. It is fun, and easy, and always feels like a very neighborly thing to do this time of year. ALL ARE WELCOME!

So, bring your friends and family and come and join us!

Have a great day.

Comments Off on Associations Around Truesdale Lake

Associations Around Truesdale Lake

Truesdale Lake has two large associations and one small association. In addition there are about a dozen riparian houses (i.e. on the lake) but in none of the associations. We call these “unaffiliated” households.

Below is a map of the associations, click here for a larger view of the map or to move around.

[mapsmarker layer=”1″]

household-pins.jpg

TLPOA is in purple, TEA is in blue, Vreeland is in yellow, and Lake Shore Drive unaffiliated houses are in red.

There are also two other categories: TEA Late (Flag) and TEA Expelled (sad face).

TEA Late households are late in paying their annual dues by nearly two years and are in danger of being expelled from the TEA unless they bring their account current. TEA Expelled members have been kicked out of the association for non-payment of member dues beyond two years.

All TEA properties retain lake rights in the deed — but the expelled homeowners are no longer eligible to join the TEA as members and have lost their ability to participate in lake and association decisions. If the expelled property is sold, the new owners will be invited to join the association.

A complete listing of properties for each association can be found here:
