Lake Management Presentation by Christian Jenne on June 18th

Christian Jenne is a Masters Degree candidate at SUNY Oneonta’s Lake Management program. He is working with us at Truesdale Lake during his graduate studies to develop a Lake Management plan to help guide our lake stewardship efforts.

Last night (June 18th) he presented to a packed audience at the South Salem Presbyterian Church on Spring Street. If you were not able to make it, we have posted the slide images below along with a PDF document of the presentation.

Christian is also working on a survey to gather data about Lake Truesdale that will be sent out at the end of the summer or early fall. When you see it in your inbox or mailbox, please help out by answering and returning the survey. Thanks!

The information sheet that Wendy McLean referenced last night on what you can do NOW to help the lake is posted here.

TEA Votes to Discontinue Associate Member Program

TEA

The TEA recently voted to discontinue their associate member program at the Spring 2015 TEA Membership Meeting.

This vote does NOT affect the regular deeded TEA residents.

The main reasons for the discontinuation are:

  • Financial: The program was costing the TEA more money in full-time lifeguard requirements than it was bringing in through associate membership payments.
  • No permit requirement: Without associate members, the TEA beach is a fully private beach for deeded TEA members only with no annual permit requirement. With associate members, the TEA beach fell under the Westchester County Department of Health purview and needed to purchase annual permits from them.
  • Fewer restrictions on beach use: TEA beach hours were restricted for regular deeded members when the association had associate members join. The county told the association as a beach with a county permit if there were no lifeguards present, the beach had to close, regardless of the season, and regardless of whether they were deeded members. This meant no winter bonfires, no skating from the beach, no fall clambakes. That sounds ridiculous — but that was the official word from the county. The over regulation started early in the Astorino administration — and this was a big factor in discontinuing the program after the 2014 season.

The associate member program was instituted decades ago to allow non-deeded residents in the surrounding community (but not deeded members of the TEA) the ability to join the TEA Beach on a seasonal basis. As far as we know, this was the only program of its kind for any of the town’s lakes.

At its peak 12 years ago there were 30 families enrolled as associate members — as well as a waiting list to get into the associate program. More recently, due to demographic shifts (fewer young families) and the kid-friendly improvements at the Lewisboro Town Pool, the associate member program has seen a marked decrease in the number of residents signing up each year.

So, the bottom line — after years of TEA board and member debate and running the program at a loss, the TEA is now just the deeded members in good standing.

Since the associate member program is written into the TEA organization bylaws as an option, the TEA could conceivably bring it back it in the future if they get at least 12 or more families to join and re-start the program. At this point, the member numbers just are not there to make it worthwhile for the TEA. And there is no desire within the association to add it back.

Bottom line: the answer to the question “Can I join the lake for the summer if I live outside the TEA area?” is NO.

If you have any other questions, please contact the TEA at tea@truesdalelake.com.

June 18th – TLPOA Annual Meeting plus Combined Lakewide Meeting Afterwards

From David Sachs, TLPOA President (respond or comment at Nextdoor Truesdale site here):

“Good morning to you all. I hope that you had a chance to enjoy this beautiful weekend. The TLPOA raft is back in place (thanks Skip and Jay!) and people were already using the beach yesterday – which is just great. And, we are planning to have our TLPOA ANNUAL MEETING at the White Church – from 7 – 8 p.m. on Thursday June 18 – one month from today.

Then we will have a COMBINED TLPOA AND TEA meeting that will focus on the lake, from 8:15 until about 9:30pm. There will be a presentation about the work that has been done about the lake during this past winter, and we will provide an update about the treatment of the lake for this summer. [link to presentation from September 2014]

All TLPOA and TEA members are invited to the meeting beginning at 8:15.

The first meeting, from 7 – 8 will be for TLPOA members only.

Looks like Memorial Day Weekend should be quite beautiful, giving all of us a chance to enjoy it outdoors. Have a great day. -David”

Treatments May 14th and May 28th

Allied Biological Captain and Crew on their lake treatment mission.

Allied Biological Captain and Crew on their lake treatment mission.

Allied is planning to treat the lake with Aquathol K for weeds this Thursday, May 14th (weather permitting). We will leave the lake level low until Thursday since it will have to be held in for 14 days after treatment. This will maximize the effectiveness of the treatment by not letting the treatment out of the lake before it has a chance to act. This means on May 14th we will be putting the boards in the dam to raise the lake level to summer heights.

Christian Jenne’s survey last week showed lake temps around 70 degrees and very little oxygen at the bottom indicating a potential for algae growth. Christian is a Masters in Lake Management candidate at SUNY Oneonta and Truesdale is one of the Lakes he is studying over his time in the program. It is possible to pre-treat for algae to get ahead of it during the season if the conditions point to a possible bloom.

Allied can only do one treatment at a time and must wait 14 days between the Aquathol and copper sulfate (algae) treatments. If the algae does present a problem earlier, we can treat with Green Clean Pro as soon as 7 days after the Aquathol treatment.

Bottom line: Herbicide treatment is scheduled for May 14th and algae treatment scheduled for May 28th – both treatments require a 24 hour restriction on swimming.

Note: The May 14th treatment is an herbicide so if your lawn irrigation system draws water from the lake please turn it off for 14 days following the Aquathol K treatment (unless you want to kill your lawn).
