Lake Watershed Survey

Christian Jenne, graduate student of Lake Management at the State University of New York at Oneonta, has put together and distributed a survey to help determine characteristics of our lake and the surrounding area. This feedback will be one facet in helping Christian put together a comprehensive lake management plan for Truesdale Lake.

The survey can be accessed here as an online form. You can email questions to Christian at jenncf54@suny.oneonta.edu once you have completed the survey and saved it. Or you can print it out and fill in your answers and send it back (by December 12) to:

Christian Jenne
c/o Biological Field Station

Cooperstown, NY 13326

Thanks for your help with this.

Leaves are changing colors, days are getting shorter, and beach toys have been packed away for the winter.

Share your fall photos of Truesdale Lake – send them to us at lake@truesdalelake.com and we’ll put them up here.

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has sent in photos! Photo credits are in photo links – click on a photo to enlarge it.

I will do this again during the winter if people would like.

Horse & Hound Featured in Local Restaurant News

FiOS TV did a feature story on the history of the Horse & Hound. It features interviews with local patrons and Sue Vales, the owner/chef at the restaurant.

Click below to check the 5 minute video feature on a regular series they call “Restaurant Hunter.”

Field Guide to Invasive Plants

Screenshot 9:5:15, 4:23 PM-2If you have ever wondered which plants in Truesdale Lake are invasive, this free PDF booklet will tell you. We have a couple of species shown in the book, but fortunately not many.

One of the reasons we have boat stickers is to keep tabs on boats and avoid transporting invasive species into the lake that are not present already.

It is a project of Michigan State University. It has a substantial listing of plants from in, above, and around lakes.

Thanks to the New York State Federation of Lake Associations for making us aware of this fantastic free lake resource.

Treatment Report August 12

DSC_8839-X3Allied Biological was out at 7am yesterday morning (8/12) for survey and then treatment. After a few weeks of stymied treatment attempts due to weather and water conditions, the latest one was successful. Excerpt below in text, full report image also attached.

“Heavy density unicellular algae throughout the water column, and across portions of the lake surface.  Areas of concentrated unicellular algae also windblown into areas of the shoreline edge. No submersed plant growth observed at this time. White water lilies growing a few areas of the lake.

Copper Sulfate was applied for unicellular algae control.  Treatment notices were posted at the beaches.  Water use restrictions are 24 hours for swimming and livestock watering.”

Earliest possible next treatment will be at least 2 weeks from yesterday (August 26th) due to NYS lake treatment regulations.

Truesdale Lake Treatment Update – 2015-07-30

cropped-turtles_in_cove.jpgNote from David Sachs, TLPOA President (via Nextdoor Truesdale):

Good morning to you all. As many of you know, treating the lake is a complex business, and sometimes we are unable to treat it even when we are ready, willing and eager to do so. After the treatment this past Tuesday (July 28) was cancelled, we conferred with Allied Biological – the firm that manages the actual treatments – and also with the NYSDEC to get an expedited treatment for today. After many phone calls between Allied, NYSDEC and us, expedited permission was granted (usually you have to wait a full week, or sometimes two, between treatments). Allied was supposed to treat today – and we took a number of Secchi readings (indicators of lake clarity) to help. Allied had someone here on the lake at 7 a.m. this morning. Sadly, here is what we were told:

“Jeff was on the lake at 7:00 this morning. Secchi measured at 13 inches (too low) throughout the lake and the dissolved oxygen reading was 16 (too high). Treatment cannot be conducted at these measurements. NYSDEC has been notified that the next visit is scheduled for Tuesday 8/4.”

There is nothing else that we or they can do at this time; this is clearly a bad combination of Mother Nature, NYSDEC rules, and the current condition of the lake. A good thunderstorm might help a bit…

Take care.

David

Remaining Algae Treatments for Summer 2015

cropped-swans_heart_necks.jpgWe currently have 3 more algae treatments scheduled for this summer: July 28, August 11, and August 25 (all Tuesdays).

All treatments are dependent on lake condition and weather. NY State does not allow us to treat more frequently than every two weeks so if any of these are postponed due to weather or other conditions that will affect the treatment schedule after that date.

A condition that would postpone algae treatment would be a measurement showing critical dissolved oxygen levels too low. Algae treatment could lower them further and affect the fish population. Another condition that would postpone treatment would be heavy rain (forecast, on treatment day, or before treatment day) that would not allow us to impound the lake water for the required holding period.

We will update the site with Allied’s survey and treatment reports as we receive them.

5th Year for Church Tavern Biathlon

“Who Will Take The Tankards?” asks the sign at the end of Spring Street near St John’s Church. That means the Church Tavern Biathlon is BACK! The 7 mile biking portion of the course circles Lake Truesdale in a counter-clockwise manner while the run portion follows a shorter 4 mile course where runners catch a glimpse of the lake.

The South Salem Church Tavern Biathlon, is hosted by St. John’s Church and will take place on Labor Day, September 7th at 9:30am. The biathlon is returning for its fifth year in 2015.

Church Tavern Biathlon Bike Course

Church Tavern Biathlon Bike Course

The bike course starts at St. John’s at the corner of Spring Street and Route 35, travels down Spring Street, up Church Tavern road and back down to Spring Street where it backtracks to Lake Shore Drive then Truesdale Lake Drive. The course takes a right onto Salem Lane and then rejoins Truesdale Lake Drive for a bit (right turn) before making a left onto Boway then next left onto Country Lane onto Hoyt over the dam and then up Bouton Street (not Gilbert) up the hill. At the intersection of Bouton and Lake Shore the course continues down Lake Shore Drive on the west side of the lake. Bikers make the final right turn onto Spring Street for the last half mile and then transition to the running leg.

The running course is out and back on Spring Street with the Church Tavern loop thrown in again in case you didn’t get enough of the hill the first time around on the bike!

There will be prizes, BBQ, and music immediately following the event.

Locally the event supports The Community Center of Northern Westchester (www.communitycenternw.org). Nationally, it supports The Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Globally it supports Carpenter’s Kids (www.carpenterskids.net). Each is a very worthy cause and each does a great job fulfilling their missions responsibly.

DSC_0650-X3To sign up for the Biathlon (7 mile bike, 4 mile run) visit the registration page here: http://www.raceit.com/search/event.aspx?id=33809. You can register as individual ($35) or team relay ($50).

If you’re still not feeling up to running and biking the whole course, there is a Run or Walk Only division for $20. The Run/Walk participants will be timed this year and will leave soon after the Biathlon start. You still get a medal, free BBQ, and the satisfaction of knowing you helped three great charities.

– See more at: http://www.raceit.com/search/event.aspx?id=33809

If you are not planning to run, come out and cheer the runners & bikers on!

Contact Brian Stempel with any questions about the race or if you’d like to become a sponsor or booster (brian.stempel@gmail.com).
