Saturday Rain Shows the Power of Stormwater Runoff

The 3 inches of rain that fell on Saturday, October 24th showed the power that water can exert over our man-made attempts at control.

The fifty foot section of pipe laid on Friday was moved askew by the torrent from the rainstorm.  What had been set perfectly sloped towards the lake was bent upwards by the force of the water and the gravel and rock filled runoff.

Fortunately, the crew from Landscape Unlimited arrived on Monday morning, noted the setback, and had it corrected within a few hours before moving on to the next stages.

The first photo (top) shows the nice tidy Friday afternoon work. Below photo shows the same site on Sunday morning after the Saturday storm. The water not only washed away the small rocks but also took out some larger rocks and swept it all under the pipe, lifting the end several feet higher that on Friday afternoon.

Diet for a Small Lake

Diet for a Small Lake

Another book we recommend for lake watershed residents, lake managers, towns with lakes, and lake associations is titled “Diet for a Small Lake” and is published by the New York State Federation of Lake Associations (TEA and TLPOA are both members of this volunteer run organization).  Cost is $20 + shipping for the softcover version.  Click here to download the order form.

To understand how to manage a lake, you must know something about the lake itself.

Diet for a Small Lake is a practical manual that focuses on the most common problems encountered by lake associations and lakeshore residents. The publicaton offers guidance by providing an introduction to lake ecology, descriptions of lake restoration and aquatic plant management techniques, a special section on applicable New York State laws and regulations, and guidance for preparing a watershed management plan.

Lakescaping for Wildlife & Water Quality

If you are interested in helping our lake with your landscaping decisions, get a copy of this book from the Minnesota Dept of Natural Resources for $19.95.  (Amazon also sells it for a bit more.)  It is a 176 page full color spiral bound book chock full of critical information for all homeowners in the lake watershed, not just owners right on the water.

From the website description:

“Full title: Lakescaping for Wildlife & Water Quality. Tired of mowing grass when you head up to your lake cabin? Learn how to landscape your shoreline property to prevent shoreline erosion, restore wildlife habitat, wildflowers and clean water. This book will show you the way to design your area for increased enjoyment of your lakeside or riverside getaway.”

Thanks to Vi and Mark Patek for letting us know about this book!

If you are not at the lake, you can have the next best thing: a 360 degree panorama of the lake south of “Pirate Island” (the southernmost island). The panorama was shot in 2001 so some houses and trees look a bit different! (Can you find the house that doesn’t exist any more?)

Click and drag in the panorama to navigate.  With your cursor in the panorama, the Shift key zooms in and the Control ket zooms out.  Enjoy!  (Thanks to Dan C for the panorama!)

Stormwater Work Moving Along

Work on the Truesdale Lake Drive Stormwater Project got underway in earnest today. Preliminary work and staging had been underway for some time already.  The pipe from the plunge pond up to the separator unit was laid today.  Check the photos or swing by this weekend for a look.

Stormwater work underway on Truesdale Lake Drive

If you are wondering what is going on with all of the pipes and equipment at the TEA beach area on Truesdale Lake Drive, the answer is a stormwater management project funded by the New York City DEP with matching funds from the Town of Lewisboro.

To see the kind of erosion and damage this project aims to avoid, click here to view some videos taken during a rainstorm in 2004 and photos taken after a storm in 2005.

The project has been in the works for over 5 years and has gotten underway.  Come down to the beach parking lot to take a look.

The project is directed by the Lewisboro Lakes Committee.

This will be a silent auction of several boats located on Lakeshore Drive. Bids will be accepted in person between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Simply write your bid on the paper attached to the boat(s) you are interested in. To see pictures of the 10 boats we currently have to auction, click here (or click on the photos to the right): Link to Photos of Boats at Picasa

At 2 p.m., all bids will be closed and the highest bidder will be notified. Payment must be made at that time preferably in cash. No credit cards will be accepted. Once payment is made, the winner then takes ownership and responsibility for their boat.
