TEA Beach Cleanup This Sunday May 23 starting @ 10am

We will be getting the TEA beach ready for the summer season this Sunday May 23rd starting at 10am.

First things include getting the swimming dock floated and tied up along with the swimming float ropes — if you can come at 10am sharp this is when we need the most muscle!

Please come out if you can to help spread the new sand out as well.  Other projects include installing a chain for the lower driveway, cleaning out the shed, firing up the aerators, installing shelves in the shed, putting in new geese fencing for the beach, and planning out new landscaping for the new entry area.

The beach opens for the summer the weekend after this one — Memorial Day weekend.  There will be lifeguard hours every weekend from Memorial Day through June 26th and then regular beach hours every day except treatment days which will be posted on this website and are typically done on mondays.

This Friday 5/21 – Presentation on the phytoplankton and zooplankton in our lakes

From Janet Anderson of the Three Lakes Council: All are welcome to the Three Lakes Council presentation on the phytoplankton (algae) and zooplankton (critters) found in lakes, and how these items at the base of the food chain can influence – and be influenced by – the fish in the lakes.  Our shorthand for this presentation is “goop and zoop”.   Chris Doyle of ABI will be presenting, and we plan to have a microscope to allow you to see what’s in the water.   It will be at the Waccabuc Country Club carriage house starting at 7:30 on Friday, May 21.  Hope to see you there!

No Phosphorus Fertilizer

As of May 2009, Westchester County prohibits the use of Phosphorus fertilizer.  Please make sure you don’t mistakenly run afoul of this law.  Notify your lawn care company.

Remember, a pound of phosphorous can generate 500 -1100 pounds of algae or lake weeds!

Three Lakes Website

The Three Lakes Council (Lakes Waccabuc, Rippowam, Oscaleta) has a great website with lots of information that is also relevant to Truesdale Lake.  Their website is http://www.threelakescouncil.org.  One great article is about Yard Care for Lake Stewardship with information about minimizing your property’s impact on the watershed.  Here’s a quote about fertilizer:

Don’t fertilize. The best way to reduce phosphorous is to eliminate fertilizers, which are generally rich in phosphate. To give you an idea of the magnitude of the impact, if all other nutrients are present, as they are in our lakes:

a pound of phosphorous can generate 500 -1100 pounds of algae or lake weeds.

Test soil. If your heart is set on fertilizing, have your soil tested to determine if it is really necessary, and if it is, how much to apply. The Cornell Cooperative Extension will test your soil. Just send a note requesting a soil analysis kit along with a check for $15.60 to:

CCE – Westchester

26 Legion Drive

Valhalla, NY 10595

You will receive a kit and a bag in which to mail your soil sample for a full analysis. (Call 914-285-4640 for more information).

There is a lot more good, sensible information that will save you money — and keep the lake clear and natural!
