TEA Summer Kickoff Party Sunday June 12th

TEA summer kickoff party 2010

Join us for the TEA annual summer kickoff party Sunday June 12th from 3-7pm at the TEA Beach on Truesdale Lake Drive!

The TEA will provide burgers and hot dogs plus soft drinks and water. Potluck for salads, desserts, and snacks. Check your mail for details. Please RSVP and let us know what you plan to bring (RSVP to Rosemarie McCarthy at 763-0744) and so we can get a good idea of how many burgers and hot dogs to get.

Last year the adult vs. kids dodgeball game proved epic. We’ll have music and games plus plenty of beach toys and good cheer to go around. Looking forward to a great time and to kicking the summer off in style!

Jack Fles

Jack sailing in 2003 on Truesdale Lake

Jack Fles, longtime Truesdale Lake resident and sailor, passed away yesterday.  Our condolences to his family.

His obituary is below from the Lewisboro Ledger:

Jacob William Fles, known as Captain Jack by friends and family, died on Monday, March 21, at his home in South Salem. He was 89.

Born in Paterson, N.J. on Sept. 6, 1921 to Jacob Nicholaas and Hester Fles, Mr. Fles worked as a corporate pilot for Wayfarer Ketch for 30 years. A Navy veteran and carrier pilot, he served in the Battle of Midway and witnessed firsthand the bombing of Iwo Jima. A pioneer in corporate aviation, Mr. Fles spent his days sailing, golfing and woodworking, specializing in wooden canoes. He enjoyed gardening and skiing up until the age of 88.

His family said Mr. Fles will be remembered for his optimism, practical joking and willingness to lend a hand wherever needed.

Mr. Fles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan; sons Jack and his wife, Becky (Walker), of Gardiner, Maine, and Robert and his wife, Donna (Festo), of Somers; grandchildren Keegan, Broghann and Jacob, all of Gardiner, and Jessica, John and James, all of Somers. He was predeceased by son Thomas P. Fles in 1983.

Calling hours are Saturday, March 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 27 at 1, at the Presbyterian Church in South Salem*.

Dog Walkers – Please Clean Up After Your Pet

Until all dogs evolve to this skill level, it is up to pet owners to clean up their messes.

Truesdale Lake is lovely for a walk any time of year. We welcome many people from both the neighborhood and outside the area to our perfect 2.6 mile loop.

Unfortunately, some of the folks walking with dogs are not cleaning up after their pets.  The evidence is right at the curb, near the mailboxes, and sometimes right in the middle of the street.  It is an unpleasant topic but it must be addressed.

If you own a dog, these unwelcome feces (are there any other kind?) pose a direct danger to your pet.

They can carry disease or parasites (hookworm, roundworm, and campylobacter) which can spread throughout the dog community quickly.

The poop also is a severe health hazard for small children, organ transplant recipients, immune system compromised patients, and the elderly.

Finally, the poop contributes to elevated fecal coliform bacteria in the lake and is generally disgusting smelling and unpleasant.

What can you do?

81Y-ss-7OaL._SL1500_If you own a dog, clean up after your pet.  There are bag carriers that attach to leashes and collars like the one for sale here (and here).

Note: Many dog owners do clean up but then place their bags in the closest available private trash bin.  Many of the trash removal companies simply leave these baggies behind when hauling the big bags of trash (why are they so picky?  We don’t know!)  This leaves the homeowner to clean up the bags.  Solution: Take your used doggie bags back to your own trash to minimize your impact and be a good neighbor.

Doggie bag dispenser and receptacle. Should we invest in one of these or ask pet owners to be individually responsible?

If you see a dog owner who is not taking responsibility, please politely ask them to clean up after their pet.  If they refuse, you can offer them a plastic bag if they have none.  In cases of repeat offenses, the Lewisboro Dog Control Officer (Christine McKenna) can be reached via the town.

You can also email Janet Donahue, Lewisboro Town Clerk (914-763-3511).  Town law prohibits dogs from “Creating a nuisance by defecating, urinating or digging on public property or private property other than that of its owner” among other things.  New changes in state and local dog laws took effect in 2011.

The town and lake community can help as well.  The community can help educate residents about the dangers of dog poop.  The town may be able to help by getting “doggie bag” dispensers and possibly receptacles placed strategically around the lake.  This is a possibility, even more so if grant money can be obtained and used.

Together we can help stop this problem and keep our wonderful lake neighborhood clean and healthy for all residents!

Please write any comments or ideas you have in the comments section below.

[Note: Updated in 2016 to reflect changes in Town Clerk and Dog Control officer.]
