Lake Treatment Permits Approved, Treatment Scheduled for Monday, May 22nd

We have received approval from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for our lake treatment permits.

Allied Biological is scheduled to treat the lake on Monday, May 22nd. Be especially cautious about using lake water for lawn or other plantings for up to 14 days after after the treatment since they will be using an herbicide. Swimming prohibition is 1 full day after application.

Patent Trader Article about Formation of North Salem Lake Tax District

candlewood_lake_n_salem_40qThe May 4th, 2006 Patent Trader (Real Estate Section) ran an article about Candlewood Lake in North Salem (Valeria Circle, just off route 22 over the Goldens Bridge line, not the Candlewood Lake in Danbury) receiving an OK to create a lake tax district comprised of the surrounding residential area to finance lake restoration projects.

Link to full story here or click on the image to the left to read the scanned article online.

The process these homeowners and the Town of North Salem went through is similar in many ways to the Truesdale Lake Restoration Project that Truesdale Lake has currently underway.

Comments Off on 2005 Aquatic Plant Management Plan Available

2005 Aquatic Plant Management Plan Available

img43f011549949cAllied Biological has published the Lake Truesdale 2005 Aquatic Plant Management Plan. The document is available to read and download here. The report is a newly required component of the 2006 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation aquatic herbicide permit application.

The report is incredibly comprehensive and recommended reading to all lake residents whether you have been living here over 50 years or under 50 days (and everyone in between!).

From the Problem Statement section of the document: “According to the Truesdale Lake Property Owners Association, excessive aquatic plant growth has existed in Truesdale Lake since the late 1950’s. Aquatic macrophytes that reach nuisance densities include pondweeds (leafy pondweed, and the invasive exotic curly-leaf pondweed) and the native waterweed (Elodea). Over the past ten years, the extent of plant growth and invasive plant growth has not increased significantly. This is due to seasonal plant management activities, and the fact that all areas of the lake inhabitable by said species are already colonized. Should other invasive species be introduced which are capable of growth in deeper water, total plant coverage would probably increase.

Any discussion of vegetation in Truesdale Lake must also include algae. As plants reach the surface in Spring, they are quickly colonized by filamentous algae. The lake also seasonally supports Nitella sp., a macroalgae. However, the most problematic algae growth occurs following plant management activities each summer, when the algal population shifts to produce extensive phytoplankton blooms. This is the most prolific type of algae in Truesdale Lake, and has been for at least the last decade. The frequency and intensity of algae blooms are influenced by both plant management techniques and summer weather trends.

Swimming and boating activities are the major lake uses impaired by excessive aquatic macrophyte and plankton densities. The lake does not allow motorized boats, but does host a Sunfish sailboat fleet with weekly events. Fishing is also listed as a lake use, though the Committee did not indicate fishing as an impaired use. However, with excessive macrophyte growth at the water’s surface, it’s likely this use would be impaired as well, should plants be left unmanaged. In addition, invasive exotic species (such as curly-leaf pondweed) tend to reduce overall aquatic macrophyte diversity. This is clearly seen in the results of the July 7th aquatic vegetation survey, as only three different species (and benthic filamentous algae) were observed. This reduced diversity will in turn reduce the diversity of other aquatic biota such as fish and aquatic macro-invertebrates.”

Comments Off on Premium Electric Boats

Premium Electric Boats

img43ded4941fb40A Truesdale Lake fan recently alerted us to these high end Canadian-made electric boats made by The Canadian Electric Boat Company. Perfect for petroleum-free Lake Truesdale!

from the website:
“Most boat builders offer speed. When this electric boat was designed, CEBC had more sophisticated pleasures in mind, we wanted to enable you to truly relax and appreciate the scenery with your family and friends. Thus, we decided to slow you down a notch to enable you to take your time. This was the idea behind the creation of our electric boats, pleasure-crafts especially designed for those who are interested in more leisurely navigation….

The fibreglass hull has been designed by Ian Bruce, who also designed the “Laser”, an Olympic-class sailing boat.”

The draft on the larger boat is 20″ so certain parts of the lake would be chancy. The smaller boat seats 4-5, the larger boat seats up to 8 adults.

The two models start at C$30,000 and C$55,000 respectively. That’s before options like a 12v portable fridge, canopy, radio, and banquet table. See the website for more details if interested…

…And be sure to invite me along if you spring for one!

Comments Off on Aquatic Invasive Species Eradication Grant Program

Aquatic Invasive Species Eradication Grant Program

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has informed us of a statewide grant for projects that aim to “eradicate aquatic invasive species from the waters and wetlands of New York State.” This money is to be made available during the 2005-6 Fiscal Year and must be applied for along with a plan, budget, and permit applications. The program will match one-third (33%) of any monies spent.

Deadline for application is February 28th, 2006. (We received notification just today.)

A summary of the program is available online here: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/habitat/erad.html

A detailed packet can be found here: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/habitat/eradgrantfinal.pdf – it contains application instructions, the scoring system used to prioritize grant applications, and project qualification requirements.

Grant Application PDF is here:
http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/habitat/eradgrantappform.pdf and the bundget application is here:http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/habitat/eradgrantbudgetsum.pdf

Our lake has one invasive species that I know of: Curly-leaf pondweed - Potamogeton crispus. Any program designed to completely elimnate this nusiance weed would be eligible for the matching grant, but the lake community would have to come up with a plan to do it and then spend the other two-thirds (67%) of the budget in order to receive the matching funds.

Grants are for a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $100,000. The total grant appropration is $1,000,000.

Let me know what you think. You can also post comments to this article by clicking on the “Comments?” link and then the “Post Comment” button at the bottom of the article.

Description of Lake Truesdale Stormwater Improvement Projects and Estimated Cost

We have made available descriptions of the 6 stormwater improvement areas. To link to the document on this website, click here.

From Mike Bartoss of Land-Tech Consultants:

This memo is for your use in preparing an application for a financial grant to help pay for drainage improvements around Truesdale Lake. These drainage improvements are intended specifically to reduce the flow of sediment and adsorbed nutrients into the lake.

There are six sites where work is proposed. For each site, we have prepared a brief description of the proposed work, benefit(s) of doing the work, an approximate cost estimate, and an estimate of the amount of time to complete the work.

To the estimated time to compete the work should be added a substantial amount of time to acquire temporary and permanent easements on private property for the initial construction and the subsequent maintenance. Additional time will also be required to obtains permits for the work and to select and engage one or more contractors. For Site #4, it will be prudent to select the contractor first, then revise the plans to accommodate his methods and equipment if necessary. Finally, the work at Sites 1, 3, 5 & 6 is best completed while the lake water level is drawn down for the proposed dam repairs.

NOTE: the grant money plus town matching/like-kind funds is not enough money to accomplish all of these projects, but it will offset the amount of money that will be needed for the proposed/discussed Truesdale Lake tax district.

EOH Grant Meeting at Lake Katonah Clubhouse

Last night representatives of 7 lakes in Lewisboro along with Jim Nordgren, Mike Meyer (NYC DEP), and Gina D’Agrosa (Westchester County) met at the Lake Katonah Clubhouse to discuss use of the “East of Hudson” (EOH) Stormwater/Water Quality grant that Lewisboro is eligible to receive up to $312,500 from.

Any grant money received by Lewisboro must be matched dollar for dollar by the town either in dollars or services provided (e.g. highway department, engineering, or other trackable services).

Representatives attended from Timber Lake, Three Lakes (Waccabuc, Oscaleta, Rippowam), Lake Kitchawan, Lake Katonah, and Lake Truesdale.

The main topics were what projects are eligible for grant money. Guidelines are in the information available at the meeting. A general rule is capital projects are favored.

Each lake presented projects they would like grant money for and Mike Meyer of DEP said the town and each lake must prioritize the projects since the grant and matching funds clearly would not cover the entire scope of everyone’s wish list.

The Lake Truesdale representatives (Robert Cummings and David Sachs) agreed to publish their application on this site. Watch the website news for further details. Participants agreed to have this material ready by December 5th, 2005 and get it to Mike Meyer at DEP as well as Jim Nordgren for review.

The same group will get back together for a meeting on December 6th (tuesday) at 7:30pm to review again and answer questions that come up.

Final application for the grant money is due to the county before December 31, 2005. The final application must come from the Town of Lewisboro who then must sign an Intermunicipal Agreement (IMA) by June 30, 2006 to get the money.

If anyone is interested in coming to the next meeting, let me (Rob Cummings) know via lake@truesdalelake.com email. We can carpool over.
