The lake will be treated with Copper Sulfate (to combat Algae growth) on the following tentative schedule for the rest of the summer (updated July 22nd): August 2, August 16, August 30th (every other Monday).

These dates are weather-dependent. Heavy rain will cancel or postpone the treatment. If weather forces a postponement, the lake will be treated the following Monday.

July 4th marked the opening of the Fleet #27 Racing Season on Truesdale Lake. Races are held every Sunday (2PM start time), rain or shine, starting across from the Gilbert Street Beach. Below is the race sheet, with detailed information and rules.

Results from prior year’s series’ can be found here: http://truesdalelake.com/boats/sunfish-fleet-27/.

By next weekend I hope to have a new page for this year’s results, updated each week!

TRUESDALE LAKE SUNFISH RACING SCHEDULE 2004
SUNFISH FLEET #27

OBJECTIVE
The prime objective of our racing series is to have fun and encourage us all to leave our lawn maintenance, desk work and other chores and spend some time out on our beautiful Truesdale Lake.

SCHEDULE
A summer Sunfish series of 20 races will be held, with 2 races each Sunday, the first beginning at 2:00 p.m. Practice races will be held in June. The regular series on the 10 Sundays from July 4- September 5. (“President’s Cup special race on 9/6- Labor Day) Since we only count your best 10 races, you can win the series, and still miss 1/2 the races. If sufficient boats participate- two fleets will compete allowing beginners an easier learning experience otherwise beginners will also be given early starts and minimal rule enforcement.

TROPHY
The winner keeps the fleet trophy for a year.

SERIES RULES
Two official races will be run each Sunday. A race will be canceled if no boat finishes within one hour of the start. The winner of the series will be determined by adding up the scores for each boat’s best 10 races out of a possible 20. Ties will be broken by counting the number of firsts.

SCORING
1 point for starting (register with race committee),
1 point for finishing
1 point for each boat you beat, 1/2 point for first place finish
Results posted at: http://www.truesdalelake.com

The new standard yacht racing rules apply. Summary follows.

DEFINITIONS
STARTING line in lake in front of the Patek’s across from Gilbert St. beach
STARBOARD is the right side of the boat when you are looking forward.
PORT is the opposite side of starboard – the left side.
STARBOARD TACK is when the wind is coming over the starboard side & the boom is on the port side.
Primary RIGHT OF WAY rules:
A boat on starboard tack has right of way over a boat on port tack.
When two boats are side by side on the same tack, the downwind (leeward) boat usually has right of way unless it overtook the windward boat from completely behind it or is too close to a race buoy.
WHEN CHANGING TACKS and thus getting right of way, the other boat must be given room to get out of the way.
Boats should avoid collisions.
RULE OF 720 DEGREES: if you foul another boat you must sail around in two complete circles (any size).

CREW: Seniors may race with or without crew, with no scoring penalties.

The regular weekend racers would be happy to help you learn to sail or to help you learn the racing rules. We can often provide a spare boat for those who would like to try out racing or for those who have weekend guests who know how to race and want to join in.

Copper Sulfate Treatment June 28th

Allied Biological treated the lake with Copper Sulfate, an Algaecide, on Monday, June 28th. Swimming is prohibited for 24 hours after application.

Copper Sulfate is used to combat Algae growth (it does not kill weeds). Recently we have had an early outbreak of algae due to the decomposition of the Elodea weeds killed by the earlier Avast! treatment. Typically algae is a problem later in the summer so expect another Copper Sulfate treatment in August.

If you have any questions about Copper Sulfate or would like to read the Material Safety Data Sheet, see the Downloads section of this website.

Aqua Cleaner Vacuums up Weeds & Debris

Recently the Lake Management Committee sent a letter to all riparian homeowners at Truesdale Lake.

The letter notified homeowners about :

1.) The Aqua Cleaner service offered by Univeral Water Solutions of Rochester, NY. The Aqua Cleaner Service is essentially a vacuum which cleans up weeds and debris. The complete brochure is available here, or visit the downloads section.

2.) A service offered by Allied Biological, the company that treats our lake, where they can plant waterfront-friendly plants along your lakeshore.

Click on the links above to get the documents or visit our downloads section (Lake Management subsection) to download and read the information.

From the letter:

Quote:

Universal Water Solutions will offer any Riparian Property owner on Truesdale Lake a special rate if you contact them before June 1st. Also, you can get special rates if adjacent property owners agree to have them perform the service at the same time.

We will continue to treat the lake for weeds, but as most of you are aware the treatment does not always eliminate all the weed growth, especially along the shore lines.

If you are interested in this service please contact Universal Water Solutions directly.

In addition to the above, Allied Biological, Inc., the company that has been treating our lake for a number of years, has a special offer for riparian property owners. For $995 they will plant approximately 100 feet of shoreline with a mixture of native, flowering, herbaceous plants. This includes both in water and at/above waterline plantings. These plantings will protect the lake. The price is good through June 15th. If you would like more information regarding this offer contact Gary Struve at 763-9302.

Please Drive Safely and Carefully

img406e1b7c3ddaeThe vast majority of residents around the lake and surrounding community obey the speed limit.

However, there are always a few who speed by as we are taking our walks or rides around the lake or working in our yards, seemingly oblivious to the bikers, pedestrians, and children around every bend.

To those drivers I ask this: consider leaving a bit earlier so you aren’t always rushing in their cars. Take more care when driving and realize you are only in control of your own car. You cannot possibly anticipate what a 3-year-old is going to do. And you can’t see around corners.

Local Vet Says Pick Up After Your Dog

(this letter was sent to the Lewisboro Ledger and printed in their March 4, 2004 issue)

I live on Truesdale Lake. It is a hidden treasure with beautiful views for any season.

This morning I went for a jog and was taken aback by the amount of dog feces (a.k.a. poop) I had to jump over during my 3 mile run around the lake.

Many people enjoy walking the lake loop because of the gorgeous water views but to have to watch every step you take because of the tremendous amount of dog feces is just not right.

Not only is it unpleasant to step on, but there are also some serious health reasons for avoiding dog poop. Dog feces can carry potentially harmful pathogens to humans and other pets alike. Certain diseases such as Toxocarosis (Roundworm infection) and Ancylostomosis (Hookworm infection) can be transmitted to other dogs and possibly children by the ingestion of contaminated feces. (continues… click “Read More..” below)

As a veterinarian, I treat many cases of roundworm and hookworm infection in my patients every week. I routinely deworm all puppies and kittens 2- 4 times before they are even 16 weeks of age. Even older animals can become infected with roundworms and/or hookworms if they ingest contaminated feces.

Animals that are not routinely dewormed can be unknowingly infected with these parasites. Infected animals can then shed microscopic eggs in their feces, which can then transmit the disease to other animals if the poop is “accidentally” ingested. Eggs may remain in the soil for many months and contaminate the environment. Young children should not play in areas contaminated with dog feces.

If you would like more information on how roundworms and hookworms infect humans, go to the Centers For Disease Control Website at www.cdc.gov. Search the alphabetical list under roundworms and hookworms. See how serious these diseases can be for you and your beloved pets.

I’d also like to mention that according to our Town Clerk Kathleen Cory that although the town doesn’t “have a “pooper scooper” law–our town code says dogs can’t make the “deposit” on the road in the first place.

As a resident of Lake Truesdale, I want to say enjoy your walks, take your pets out for exercise, enjoy the beautiful views,
but please pick up after your dog.

Thank you,
Carol Gamez D.V.M.
